How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid

When you invest in a new Mercedes-Benz, you want to do everything possible to keep it in excellent condition for years to come. When you bring your Mercedes in for service, all of your car’s vital fluids are checked. Still, Beachwood-area drivers should know how to check those vitals on their own, to be sure that nothing goes wrong in-between visits. Here’s how to check your transmission fluid and keep your Mercedes-Benz in good condition. We also have some transmission fluid facts on how much transmission fluid you need and more.

What Does Transmission Fluid Do?

Transmission fluid is what lubricates, and cools, the components of your vehicle’s transmission to ensure a smooth performance. So what transmission fluids do you need and what other transmission fluid facts should you know? We can help.

When it comes to what transmission fluids you need, you’ll want to double-check with your owner’s manual or contact our service center. Having the right transmission fluid is important. Though the primary function of car transmission fluid is to lubricate the components of the transmission, it also:

  • Cleans and protects metal surfaces from wear
  • Conditions gaskets
  • Enhances cooling function and reduces high operating temperatures
  • Increases rational speeds and temperature ranges

How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

Do you drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission? Checking your transmission fluid is quick and easy:

  1. Park your car on a level surface and turn on the engine. Let it warm up.
  2. Find the transmission fluid dipstick. Your owner’s manual will tell you where it’s located.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid on the dipstick with your finger. It should be red and mostly transparent when you rub it with your thumb. If it’s cloudy or smells burnt, it’s time to change your transmission fluid.
  4. Wipe off the dipstick with a rag, then reinsert it. Pull it out again. If it’s below the “Full” marking, add more of the appropriate transmission fluid. Use a funnel to pour in enough to get the level to the right spot.

If your car has a manual transmission, you will probably need a jack! The transmission’s plug is often located under the car.

Transmission Fluid Facts

Here’s what Mayfield drivers should know about transmission fluid:

  • If your Mercedes hesitates before shifting gears, check your transmission fluid first to rule out that it’s not low. If it’s fine, it’s time to visit the Mercedes-Benz of Bedford service center. (Need a top-off? We can help with that too.)
  • The kind of transmission fluid you need will depend on the age of your Mercedes-Benz and if you have a manual or automatic transmission. Your Mercedes-Benz owner’s manual will tell you what kind you need.
  • Replace your transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on your driving habits in Cleveland.

How often do you check your transmission fluid? You should check all of the vital fluids in your Mercedes-Benz — oil, brake fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid for starters — at least once a month. While you’re underneath the hood, you should also check for car battery corrosion.
