Many Beachwood-area drivers are comparing the 2021 BMW 3 Series vs. Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and it shouldn’t be difficult to see why. Both models handle highways and city streets confidently, and each comes equipped with a rich and lushly appointed interior. With that said, only one compact luxury sedan can rise to the top, and we think the C-Class has to be recognized for the ways that it wins out over top rivals.

C-Class vs. 3-Series: Engine & Performance

Drivers comparing the BMW 3 Series vs. Mercedes-Benz C-Class will immediately notice that these two models offer very similar base-level engines, but this initial similarity belies a major difference, one which only becomes more apparent as you move down the line! The full lineup of 2021 C-Class Sedans has not yet been released, but if you’re weighing these two models, you should know that the C-Class has traditionally been offered with much more power than the 3 Series. While the AMG® C-Class configurations are still in model-year 2020, we expect these engines to be carried over without any major changes for 2021:

2021 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan – Powertrains

  • 2.0L I4 turbo with 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque (C 300 Sedan, C 300 4MATIC® Sedan)
  • AMG®-enhanced 3.0L V6 biturbo with 385 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque (AMG® C 43 Sedan)
  • Handcrafted AMG® 4.0L V8 biturbo with 469 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque (AMG® C 63 Sedan)
  • Handcrafted AMG® 4.0L V8 biturbo with 503 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque (AMG® C 63 S Sedan)

The base-level C-Class includes rear-wheel drive, and like the rest of the lineup, comes standard with a 9G-TRONIC® 9-speed automatic transmission. 4MATIC® AWD is standard on the next step up, and if you progress to the AMG® line, you’ll be rewarded with AMG® Performance 4MATIC® AWD instead.

2021 BMW 3-Series Sedan – Powertrains

  • 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder with 255 hp and 294 lb-ft of torque
  • 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder & Electric Motor with 288 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque
  • 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline-6 with 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque

All models are offered with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and that means the C-Class has a slight edge from the start! Additionally, all 3 Series models are offered with xDrive AWD as an option rather than a standard feature–which means that you have to pay for the extra upgrade no matter which trim you settle on. The bottom line of course, is that the C-Class offers three separate engines with more power than the most powerful 3 Series, not to mention many trims with standard 4MATIC® AWD

Is Any Other German Sedan Worth Considering?

If you’re comparing the Audi A4 vs. BMW 3 Series vs. Mercedes-Benz C-Class, you should know that the 2021 A4 starts with just 201 hp, and only offers up to 261 hp. That’s another way of saying that the C-Class is the pick of the litter, as far as compact German luxury sedans are concerned. Looking for more power? Compare the 2021 Mercedes-Benz C-Class vs. E-Class with our team.

C-Class vs. 3-Series: Premium Features

No matter which model you choose for your Cleveland and Mayfield adventures, comparing the C-Class vs. 3-Series sets you up for success. That’s especially apparent when you look to each model’s feature suite, since both of these luxury sedans include features such as:

  • Power front seats with memory
  • Genuine wood trim
  • 40/20/40 split fold-down rear seats
  • Selectable drive modes
  • And much more!

With that said, there are more than a few easily noticeable differences between the two models. Here’s why we think you’ll prefer the Mercedes-Benz:

  • HANDS-FREE ACCESS® is standard in the C-Class, but requires an upgrade in the 3 Series. If you’ve ever struggled to open the trunk with your hands full, you know exactly how valuable this feature can be!
  • ATTENTION ASSIST® learns your normal driving behaviors and lets you know when it’s time to take a break. Like the optional Car-to-X-Communication, which allows drivers to share information with one another over the air, it’s exclusive to the Mercedes-Benz line.
  • The 2021 C-Class Sedan comes standard with a 12.3-inch central touchscreen display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. While the 3 Series offers similar features as standard, they measure just 8.8 inches diagonally.

Why should you pay extra for features that the C-Class offers as standard? With the base-level C-Class starting at $41,600 MSRP* and the base-level 3 Series starting at $41,250 MSRP, choosing the lesser model won’t move the needle on your monthly payment.
