Who Owns Mercedes-Benz?

Mercedes Benz Logo Closeup

Mercedes-Benz is a household name, whether you’re in Beachwood or somewhere halfway around the world. But who owns the Mercedes-Benz corporation, and how did they come to be one of the most prominent names in luxury auto manufacturing? Mercedes-Benz is currently owned by Daimler AG, a German corporation that includes a range of brands and manufacturers. Learn more about their history below!

Who Owns the Mercedes-Benz Corporation?

Daimler AG is based in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, a state in the southwest of Germany. In fact, Daimler AG has owned Mercedes-Benz since 1926, when the latter company was actually known as Daimler-Benz! Here’s a brief overview of their origins:

  • The company that would become Mercedes-Benz has its origins with Karl Benz, who invented the first gas-powered automobile. He started his own company called Benz & Cie.
  • Starting in 1901, it was the Daimler Motors Corporation which began to market this vehicle to the public. The three-pointed star would come a little later. However, Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler would continue to operate separate companies.
  • It wasn’t until 1926 when the two would unite their efforts under the Daimler-Benz AG header.
  • The name Mercedes-Benz was adopted somewhat later, although it was first used to designate the revolutionary engine that their company produced, and which appeared around 1900.
  • “Mercedés” was initially the name of the daughter of Emil Jellinek, a businessman and enthusiast who was intimately involved in the operations of the Daimler Motors Corporation.

If you’re a sports fan, you might also be wondering about who owns Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the home of the Atlanta Falcons. Despite the fact that Mercedes-Benz is in the name, this stadium is actually owned by the state of Georgia.
