What to Ask When Buying a Used Car

You know how to check the odometer and you know how to identify rust on a vehicle’s frame, but it’s a good idea to dig a little deeper when you’re purchasing a pre-owned vehicle in Bedford or Cleveland! So, what questions should you ask when buying a used car? We’ve laid out nine great questions to get you started.

What Questions Should You Ask When Buying a Used Car?

1. Has the vehicle been well-maintained?

Maintenance history just might be the most important “make or break” factor that you’ll consider. A vehicle that has not received regular oil changes and fluid changes may require a lot of extra work, and it probably won’t last as long as a vehicle that has been well cared for. Check the vehicle history report, and don’t be afraid to ask follow-up questions if you’re unsure.

2. Has the vehicle been in any accidents?

If a vehicle has acquired significant structural damage, it will tend to accumulate wear and tear more quickly. Ask if the vehicle has been in any accidents, and don’t be afraid to follow up! You’ll want to determine how bad the accident was, what repairs were made, and how those repairs were made as well. A vehicle is more likely to perform as intended if it is maintained with genuine OEM parts.

3. Do you have a title on hand?

If you’re dealing with an individual seller in Beachwood or Mayfield, then this is an especially important question to ask when buying a car. If the title is not available, you might end up paying for a car that still needs to be paid off.

4. Are all features working as they should?

If everything seems fine on your test drive through Bedford or Cleveland, then you might not worry too much about additional features. Still, it’s a good idea to ask this question before you buy. You might even end up working out a small discount!

5. How much is the final price—with fees included?

Taxes, delivery charges, and other fees can definitely add up quickly—and the last thing you want is a surprise when you’re signing on the dotted line. Ask in advance, and don’t be afraid to negotiate on the sticker price.

6. Is there a warranty on the vehicle?

Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are sold with their own warranty coverage, but other newer used vehicles may retain some new vehicle limited warranty coverage as well. Find out how long any remaining warranty coverage will last, and then find out if said warranty coverage is transferable to another owner! This information might come in handy if you end up reselling the vehicle at a later date.

7. Does the vehicle have aftermarket accessories or add-ons?

You should always know what you’re paying for. Aftermarket accessories may give the vehicle a unique appeal—and they might also clue you in to how the vehicle was used in the past.

8. Where has the vehicle been driven?

Although frequent washes can help to prevent damage from road salt and snow, it’s also true that vehicles generally do better in warmer, dryer climates. So, it might be worth it to find a used car that was owned and operated by someone who lives a little further south!

We belong to a nationwide group of dealerships—the Penske Automotive Group—and it’s far from uncommon for vehicles from other places to end up right here at Mercedes-Benz of Bedford.

9. Can I have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic?

It might feel strange to ask this question when you’re buying a car, but taking a vehicle to a trained mechanic is a great way to catch issues that you might have missed otherwise. Plus, if the seller doesn’t want you to take the vehicle in, that’s a very clear indication that it’s not a good buy.
