The difference between used and certified pre-owned vehicles can be summarized as follows: CPO vehicles are used vehicles that have undergone extensive inspections, meet strict qualifications, and come backed by a manufacturer’s warranty. So, while all CPO vehicles are used, not all used vehicles are CPO.  What is the difference between used and certified pre-owned where Mercedes-Benz is concerned? What to Know About Buying a Used Car

Any vehicle that has been driven by another owner, or has been used as a loaner, technically qualifies as a used vehicle. That’s true whether it has 300 miles or 130,000 miles, and so used vehicles may differ greatly in terms of quality and reliability. Partly for this reason, drivers comparing CPO vs. used often find that generic used vehicles are priced in a lower range. So, what should you know when shopping for a used car? Since the only guarantees in the used vehicle market are those provided by a reputable dealership like Mercedes-Benz of Bedford, you’ll want to do your research:

  • Most manufacturers do not require used vehicles to be inspected before being sold. Car dealerships like Mercedes-Benz of Bedford will often still do so, but it isn’t required.
  • When you’re dealing with a private seller, you should assume that the vehicle has not been inspected. Take it to a mechanic you trust and let them take a look!
  • If you’re buying a used vehicle, you should plan on spending a certain amount of money on repairs or upkeep. Factor these costs into your budget when you’re finding the car that’s right for you.
  • Although most used cars don’t receive manufacturer backing, a generic used car can still be a good investment. Even if you’re looking at a model priced under $15K, a lifespan of 200,000 miles is not an unreasonable expectation.

What to Know About Buying a CPO Car

Certified pre-owned vehicles must be thoroughly inspected by a factory-trained mechanic at an authorized dealership. Additionally, only vehicles that meet strict age and mileage limitations can qualify! Lastly, CPO vehicles generally offer significant benefits, including warranty coverage. For all these reasons, they tend to cost more than generic used cars. Naturally, the answer to the question “What is the difference between used and certified pre-owned?” will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Here’s what you need to know when shopping for a certified pre-owned Mercedes-Benz:

  • Only vehicles with fewer than 75,000 miles may qualify. A potential CPO vehicle must also be less than six years old.
  • Your purchase of a CPO Mercedes-Benz includes a comprehensive Vehicle History Report.
  • Purchasers of a CPO Mercedes-Benz vehicle may qualify for a 7-day/500-mile Exchange Privilege.
  • If your vehicle still falls under the new vehicle limited warranty, you’ll receive whatever remains of that coverage.
  • You’ll also receive one additional year of CPO warranty coverage, with no mileage limit. If your NVLW is expired at the time of your purchase, this coverage starts immediately.
  • 24/7 Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance is complimentary for as long as you retain coverage through one of these warranties. Trip Interruption Reimbursement may also be available.
