Does Car Insurance Cover the Car or the Driver?

Woman Signing Paper

Certain types of car insurance–including most comprehensive and collision coverage–technically covers the vehicle. While liability coverage also covers the vehicle, it may also cover the driver in the event that a collision occurs while driving a rental or a borrowed vehicle. So, does your car insurance cover the car or the driver? Contact our financing team for personalized assistance or reach out to your insurance representative for a final answer.  In the meantime, keep reading to explore the answers to other common financing and insurance questions.

Driver vs. Vehicle: Who Does Car Insurance Cover?

Now that you’ve got a sense of how various insurance policies may follow either the car or the driver, you’re bound to have other questions on your mind. Here, we’ve focused on some of the most common areas where drivers tend to have questions:

  • What are my responsibilities on policies where insurance covers the car? If your insurance ‘sticks’ to the vehicle, you’ll likely be required to list out other drivers who drive it from time to time. These people are known as ‘rated drivers’.
  • Can I lend my vehicle to someone who is not a rated driver? You can, but there are increased risks to doing so. Car insurance that normally follows the car may not protect you in all cases–especially if you lied about how often they’d be behind the wheel.
  • Is my child covered under car insurance? If your child is of legal driving age and in possession of a license, you should list them on your insurance to make sure that they’re covered. If they’re younger, they are most likely covered automatically. However, the amount of coverage for each passenger will vary depending on your policy. Those with learner’s permits fall into a grey area, so call your provider and get the facts!

What Does Full Car Insurance Cover?

Full, comprehensive, GAP: there are many terms to be aware of when you’re considering an insurance policy, and many things that sound similar actually have different meanings. So, what does full car insurance cover? “Full coverage” is a colloquialism that means “some combination of liability, collision, and comprehensive insurance”. No insurance policy truly covers everything, but choosing full coverage protects you against a wide range of potential issues as you drive through Beachwood. Here’s a brief overview of each type of coverage:

  • Liability insurance tends to follow the driver, but may also follow the car in some cases. It pays out a set amount, either in total or per injured party. You can set different limits for bodily injury and property damage, or choose a policy with a single, total payout limit.
  • Collision insurance covers the car, although problems can arise if you lend the vehicle to an uninsured driver or one who hasn’t been rated for your insurance. Collision insurance protects your vehicle in the event that it is damaged in an accident.
  • Comprehensive insurance covers the car, and usually has little to do with the driver. It protects you against vandalism, weather, fire, and just about everything in between.
  • Full coverage is a combination of all three insurance types, and it may also include GAP insurance. Coverage included in your full package may variously follow the car or the driver.
  • GAP insurance covers the difference between the real value of your vehicle and the current balance of your loan, i.e., it ensures that you can pay off the full loan balance in the event of a collision. It follows the car, but as with collision insurance, this is not an absolute.
